¡°XSLAB's Arm servers have remarkably low power consumption, which significantly reduces the burden on our UPS systems during scheduled campus power outages.¡±

Background

Shutting down and restarting all the servers in the office during intermittent campus electrical maintenance was always a major hassle. This led us to consider XSLAB's low-power Arm servers, believing they could easily run on UPS backup during power outages without any issues.

Usage

Currently, they are utilized as servers for core infrastructure services (OpenLDAP) and the campus VPN service.

Benefits

The system has been operating stably for an extended period, while power consumption is maintained at an exceptionally low level of around 100W.

¡°We are running the infrastructure service (LDAP), which is the most critical service for our college.¡±

The first program we decided to run on the V-Raptor¢â SQ was our core infrastructure services. Specifically, we migrated OpenLDAP—which is the most critical along with DHCP and DNS—from aging x86 servers to the V-Raptor. At the University of Hawaii, user accounts and passwords must be integrated with the central IT department's LDAP.

¡°It is also being used as a campus VPN server.¡±

We installed and are utilizing the Arm architecture version of the open-source SoftEther VPN.

¡°XSLAB's Arm server is a highly reliable product.¡±

The infrastructure nodes have been running stably with an uptime of over 400 days, and the seamless VPN operation has built solid trust in the product. Furthermore, the fact that five servers consume only 100W combined—equivalent to just one or two legacy x86 servers—is remarkably attractive.
